Samsung is apparently working to cram the cellular connectivity to its Galaxy Gear 2 smart watch. According to a Korea Herald report, the company may launch a USIM-equipped Gear 2 in the future. This unit wouldn’t require Bluetooth connection with a smartphone, and could even allow phone calls. Such model, the story suggests, could be first unveiled in South Korea with other markets getting it afterwards.
Now you may be thinking that it doesn’t make much sense to have a cellular network-connected smart watch, but wait. This will hardly be a mainstream device. Rather the Gear 2 with USIM may target specific market segments and eventually compete with devices like FiLiP which is offered by AT&T. Moreover, by allowing the watch to take SIM cards, carriers would get an incentive to sell it to their customers who in turn could get the watch for free on a contract. All said, it seems that Samsung knows what it’s doing, what do you think?
