Samsung has filed a patent application for headphones with integrated head-up display (HUD). Despite calling this product the “Earphone,” we see it as a member of the “smart glass family,” and it will obviously compete with Google Glass.
This isn’t the first time we’re hearing that Samsung wants to enter the smart glass market. Previously, we’ve told about Galaxy Glass, which may be officially announced at this year’s IFA in Berlin. Moreover, we’ve seen that augmented reality keyboard patent that could be used for getting around various functions included in the Samsung Glass.
The “Earphone” does look different than Galaxy Glass, and as far as we (don’t) know, the Korean company may launch more than one smart glass product. When we look at their smartphone and tablet strategy — which seems to be working like a charm — that makes perfect sense. Could they flood the market with different smart glasses at one point? With technology getting cheaper we could indeed see something like that happening.
As you would imagine, we’ll be watching this space and get back to you when we hear something new. Stay tuned in the meantime.
