After tablet, Tesco will launch its own-brand smartphone

It was back in September when we’ve told you that Tesco is entering the tablet market. Like that’s not enough, the British biggest retail store is now mulling its own smartphone.

Tesco is already offering mobile services as an MVNO, all with the LTE connectivity support. Adding its own smartphone to the mix kinda makes sense… or does it.

The company managed to move half a million Hudl tablets, and the idea is to repeat that success with a smartphone. The mentioned device [tablet] is pretty solid for £119, packing a 7-inch screen with 1440 x 900 pixels resolution, 1.5GHz quad-core chip, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and 16GB of expandable storage. Chances are the Tesco phone (Hudl phone?) will offer similar bang for the buck, with Tesco trying to reach as many customers as humanly possible.

Potential customers can expect a number of Tesco apps preloaded and the company may use that fact to make the phone as affordable as possible, hoping that folks will use the phone to shop for stuff from Tesco while on the go. We’ll see how that pans out.
