Yet again, we’re hearing that HTC will make a Windows Phone version of its HTC One M8 flagship. According to EVleaks, the upcoming HTC W8 — or however it ends up being known — will be the first smartphone running Microsoft’s mobile platform with BoomSound speakers and dual camera setup, offering a viable alternative to rock-solid Lumia devices.

Microsoft will help HTC to make sure everyone and their mama knows about the W8, but will that push enough users to the platform? I’m not so sure. While Windows Phone has been gaining market share in recent months, it still has a lot of catching up to do to come close to Android phone sales figures. What Microsoft needs is a convergent device a la ASUS PadFone and a whole new Windows OS that runs the same apps across different screen sizes. Alas, we’ll have to wait for another year or so to get something like that…
