The problem most smartphone users face today has “something to do” with battery life. While our screens are getting bigger and better, the battery technology stays the same.

Major handset makers are trying to address this issue with software tricks by monitoring which apps require more energy when not in use, and pause or slow their activity. Some devices like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 are already doing this, but that’s still not enough.

Microsoft on its end is experimenting with hardware-software solution that would prolong the battery life. The software side of things, called “E-Loupe,” looks for power-hungry apps and prevent them from going crazy.

On the hardware side, the Redmond giant envisions phones that use two Li-Ion batteries, one of which would be used for energy intensive activities like gaming and the other for basic phone features like calling and texting. This way, Microsoft argues, they could improve battery life by 20 to 50 percent.

Sounds like a plan if you ask me. Too bad we don’t know when this technology will be implemented in our phones. We are hoping for a short wait, though.
