China’s Allwinner announced that it will join the 64-bit chipset market by the end of the year. Those attending the Hong Kong Electronics Fair in October will be able to see this chip in action, running most likely on a tablet.

Said chip will be based on ARMv8-A technology, boasting Cortex-A53 or Cortex-A57 cores, or perhaps both. Allwinner already offers the UltraOcta A80 octa-core chip that relies on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture to pack four fast and four slow cores for maximum performance / battery life.

In addition, the company said its solution will support playback of 4K video encoded with H.265, and that it will target tablets, rather than smartphones. Allwinner lacks modems, hence it’s pretty much “stuck” at Wi-Fi connectivity. Nevertheless, their products are used in any number of tablets made by little-known Chinese companies.

What this means for you and me is that more affordable, more powerful tablets are coming. And next year, we expect to get amazing devices for as little as $200.
