Samsung Gear Solo smart watch with its own cellular connectivity to launch alongside Galaxy Note 4

The earlier rumored Samsung Gear Solo may be unveiled at the upcoming IFA in Berlin, alongside the Galaxy Note 4. From what we’ve heard before, this will be the Gear 2-like device with a SIM card slot, allowing it to work even without a smartphone connection. However, when connected to a Galaxy device, users will get additional benefits like being able to sync with various fitness tracking apps as well as Sammy’s own S Health app.

It’s worth adding that built-in cellular connectivity could make the Gear Solo more popular than other smart watches. The Korean company will rely on carriers to market and sell this device; mobile operators in turn get to benefit from the increased ARPU, bundling the Gear Solo with some data plan.

Platform wise, the Gear Solo will likely rely on Samsung’s Tizen OS rather than Android Wear. We would assume that adding cellular connectivity to Google’s wearables platform is possible, but since Tizen already supports that – chances are Samsung will go for its own software rather than the one made by the Mountain View giant.
