Sony working on a low-end 6.1-inch Xperia phablet

As part of its plan to get more customers in Asia, Sony is gearing towards launching an affordable Xperia phablet. Said device, which will be marked as Sony D22XX (D2202, D2212, D2203), appeared on the Indonesian Postel site, showing entry-level specs that include a 6.1-inch FWVGA (480 x 854 pixels) screen and 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core chip with Adreno 305 graphics. In addition, this unit will also pack 1GB of RAM, 5-megapixel rear and VGA front cameras, and 4GB of internal storage that is expandable with microSD cards.

So yes, this will be a rather affordable phone/phablet that will most likely be “stuck” to select Asian markets like Indonesia, China and perhaps India. As far as I can tell, the Sony D22XX isn’t something folks living in the Western hemisphere would go for; or at least, this isn’t a device Sony would like to associate its brand with.

It’s hard to tell when the Sony D22XX will be launched but chances are this won’t be a long wait. This phablet uses all of the common components so it shouldn’t be a challenge to start a mass production on (Sony’s) demand…
