Sony has started rolling out firmware updates for a number of its devices, including the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z, all of which will get Android 4.4.4 KitKat in the next few days.
According to the changelog for Xperia Z, the new software brings few important enhancements, such as:
- Upgrade to Android 4.4.4 (obviously)
- Better battery performance in some background applications
- Email stability & performance enhancements
- General improvements to MMS, Calendar, Wifi, Contacts & More
- All of the latest bug fixes and enhancements
Meanwhile, the Japanese company said that some of its other phones will be stuck to Jelly Bean. These include the Xperia M, Xperia M Dual, Xperia SP and Xperia L. The first three are running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, whereas the Xperia L can only “cope” with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, which doesn’t support modern wearable devices.
All of these models have a single gig of RAM and dual-core processors that prevent any future updates — there’s not enough horse-power to cram Android + Sony’s own software.
Alas, there are always unofficial routes that allow owners of Jelly Bean phones to install KitKat. Yes, that could void your warranty but you’ll get a faster device in return.
Note that we don’t suggest anyone to do this… We can’t be blamed for any data loss installing third party firmware can cause…
