Say you like Chromecast but still haven’t bought one? Perhaps you want something else, but not the basic Miracast dongle? Perhaps the newly unveiled Matchstick is a device worth trying out?
This small device promises to deliver all of the features Chromecast has and then some. Plus, it’s more affordable than Chromecast.
That being said, we’re not surprised to see it smash through its original $100k funding goal at crowdfunding website Kickstarter. All early bird models were already sold out, and in order to get the Matchstick, you’ll have to pay… drums please… a total of eighteen dollar ($18). That’s $7 off its retailer price (of $25).
Right from the bet, Matchstick makers promise support for many Chromecast apps, including popular video services such as Netflix, YouTube and Vudu. For those Chromecast apps that don’t work with Matchstick out of box, developers promise an easy way to recompile apps and make them compatible with this dongle, as well.
Arguably more interesting is the fact that Matchstick runs Firefox OS platform, potentially pawing up the way for an array of HTML apps you would be able to run on your TV. Actually, I’m not sure how all this works in real life, but it’s good to know there’s some smart system under the hood. Or so I think…
