India-made smartphone shipments climb 8% in 2025 as export boom drives growth

India’s smartphone manufacturing industry is gaining serious traction in 2025. Domestic production has jumped 8% this year, driven primarily by a sharp increase in exports to international markets.

The growth signals India’s success in positioning itself as a major global smartphone manufacturing hub, moving beyond just serving its massive domestic market to becoming a key supplier for brands worldwide.

This export surge comes as global smartphone brands continue to diversify their manufacturing bases away from China. India has emerged as the primary beneficiary of this shift, offering competitive labor costs, improving infrastructure, and government incentives through programs like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

The reported 8% increase in shipments represents a significant milestone for India’s electronics manufacturing ambitions. The country now produces smartphones not just for domestic consumption but increasingly for global markets, with major brands like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi expanding their Indian operations.

Several factors are driving this export boom:

  • Government incentives making Indian manufacturing more competitive
  • Improved quality standards meeting international requirements
  • Rising labor and operational costs in traditional manufacturing hubs
  • Global brands seeking supply chain diversification

The growth trajectory positions India to potentially challenge Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries as preferred manufacturing destinations for electronics. With the smartphone market being the largest segment in consumer electronics, this expansion could trigger similar growth in other device categories.

For India’s economy, this trend represents more than just manufacturing numbers. It creates jobs, builds technical expertise, and establishes the country as a credible alternative to China-centric supply chains. The ripple effects extend to component suppliers, logistics companies, and supporting industries that serve the smartphone ecosystem.

The timing is particularly significant as global smartphone demand shows signs of recovery after a challenging 2023. India’s ability to capture a larger share of this recovering market through both domestic consumption and exports puts the country in a strong position for sustained growth in the electronics sector.
