Motorola is adding three new devices to its popular Razr flip phone family. The company announced the Razr Ultra, Razr+, and standard Razr models, each targeting different user needs and budgets while maintaining the compact flip design that made the original Razr iconic.
This launch comes at a time when foldable phones are gaining mainstream acceptance, with Samsung, Google, and OnePlus all competing for market share. Motorola’s strategy of offering multiple price points could help it capture more of this growing segment, especially as foldable technology becomes more affordable and reliable.
External displays take center stage
The standout feature across all three devices is their external displays, which let users interact with apps without opening the phone. The Razr Ultra and Razr+ both pack 4.0-inch external screens with 165Hz refresh rates and 3000 nits peak brightness for outdoor visibility.
Users can run full apps, check notifications, and even wake the device by hovering their hand over it. The external display also works with Google Assistant voice commands, making it possible to start conversations with Gemini without touching the screen.
The standard Razr gets a smaller 3.6-inch external display but maintains the same app functionality and customization options as its more expensive siblings.
Camera systems get AI boost
All three phones emphasize photography with AI-powered features designed to simplify shooting. The Razr Ultra leads with a triple 50MP camera system that includes a next-generation LOFIC sensor claiming 6x better dynamic range than previous models.
Notable AI camera features include:
- Group Shot: Takes multiple frames and blends the best facial expressions into one photo
- Signature Style: Learns editing preferences and applies them automatically
- Camcorder Rotate to Zoom: Uses wrist rotation gestures to zoom while recording
- Frame Match: Helps others take photos by showing an on-screen guide to match your composition
The Razr+ and standard Razr both feature dual 50MP main camera systems with similar AI enhancements, though they lack the Ultra’s third camera lens.
Performance and battery improvements
The Razr Ultra runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, making it Motorola’s most powerful flip phone yet. It also packs a 5000mAh battery – the largest in any flip phone currently available – with 68W fast charging that provides a full day’s power in just 8 minutes.
The Razr+ uses the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip with a 4500mAh battery and 45W charging, while the standard Razr relies on MediaTek’s Dimensity 7450X processor with a 4800mAh battery and 30W charging. All three models support wireless and reverse charging.
Durability gets military-grade certification
Motorola has focused heavily on making these phones more durable. The Razr Ultra is the first flip phone to use Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, which Motorola claims provides 75% better drop protection than previous generations.
The standard Razr goes further, becoming the first flip phone to meet military durability standards (MIL-STD 810H) for protection against extreme temperatures, humidity, and altitude changes. All models feature titanium-reinforced hinges that have been refined over multiple Razr generations.
Pricing and availability
The three-tier approach gives buyers clear price options:
- Razr Ultra: $1,499.99
- Razr+: $1,099.99
- Standard Razr: $799.99
Pre-orders begin May 14 through Best Buy, Amazon, and Motorola’s website, with general availability starting May 21. Various carriers including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and others will stock the devices, with some carrier availability coming in the following months.
The move to offer three distinct models shows Motorola’s confidence in the flip phone market and its attempt to compete more directly with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series across multiple price segments.
