Honor has launched the Honor Play 70C, a budget smartphone priced at just $90 that targets the most entry-level segment of the market. The device was announced alongside the Honor Play 80 Plus, giving consumers two affordable options in Honor’s latest lineup.
The phone starts at 599 yuan (approximately $90) for the base model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Honor also offers two higher-tier configurations: 4GB + 128GB at 699 yuan and 6GB + 128GB at 799 yuan.
This launch reflects the ongoing battle for market share in the ultra-budget smartphone segment, where manufacturers must balance cost-cutting with essential features that consumers expect. The sub-$100 smartphone market remains crucial for brands looking to capture first-time smartphone users and price-conscious consumers in emerging markets.
The Honor Play 70C features a 6.75-inch IPS LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 720 × 1600 resolution. The screen includes a waterdrop notch housing a 5MP front-facing camera, which aligns with expectations at this price point. The 90Hz refresh rate stands out as a notable feature for such an affordable device, providing smoother scrolling and improved user experience compared to standard 60Hz displays.
For photography, the device includes a single 13MP main camera on the back that can shoot 1080p video and supports up to 10x digital zoom. While basic, this setup should handle everyday photography needs for users in this price segment.
The phone runs on MediaTek’s Helio G81 Ultra chipset, paired with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Power comes from a substantial 5,300mAh battery, which should provide solid all-day usage for typical smartphone activities.
Software-wise, the Play 70C ships with Android 15 and Honor’s MagicOS 9.0 interface. Connectivity features include:
- Dual SIM 4G support
- Dual-band Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth 5.1
- GPS navigation
- 3.5mm headphone jack
The device measures 7.89mm thick and weighs 186 grams, making it relatively slim for a budget phone. Honor offers the Play 70C in multiple color options: Midnight Black, Moonlight Silver, and Ocean Blue.
While Honor also released the Play 80 Plus with a larger 7,500mAh battery and Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 processor, the Play 70C focuses on delivering essential smartphone functionality at the lowest possible price point. This approach allows Honor to compete directly with other budget-focused brands in markets where price sensitivity remains the primary purchasing factor.
The launch timing coincides with increased competition in the budget smartphone space, as manufacturers work to capture users looking for reliable devices without premium pricing. The inclusion of features like a 90Hz display and large battery in a sub-$100 phone demonstrates how much value has improved in the entry-level segment over recent years.
