Google’s Gemini AI is replacing Assistant in cars with smarter voice commands

Cars with Google built-in are getting a major intelligence boost as Google announced that Gemini AI will replace Google Assistant in automotive systems. The upgrade promises natural conversations, vehicle-specific information drawn directly from owner’s manuals, and deeper integration with car systems.

The rollout addresses a significant shift in how drivers interact with their vehicles. Since cars with Google built-in launched in 2020, the technology has relied on traditional voice commands that required specific phrasing. This update represents Google’s commitment to making automotive AI more intuitive and useful for daily driving scenarios.

Gemini eliminates the need for rigid voice commands, allowing drivers to speak naturally while keeping their hands on the wheel. The system can handle complex requests that would have stumped previous voice assistants.

For navigation and trip planning, drivers can make detailed requests like “I need to grab lunch, find some highly rated sit-down restaurants along the way. I’m not in a rush, oh, and I’d like to eat outside.” Gemini uses Google Maps data to provide options and can answer follow-up questions about parking or menu details.

The AI can also provide real-time traffic insights by answering questions like “I’m driving by the stadium. Is there an event happening and should I avoid it because of traffic?” This contextual awareness helps drivers make informed route decisions on the fly.

Message management gets smarter too. Gemini can summarize new texts and compose responses with context. Drivers can say “Reply to Jane that I’m on my way and add my ETA,” then modify the message by adding “Actually, also ask her if I should pick up dessert” without starting over.

Gemini Live, currently in beta, opens up conversational learning opportunities during drives. Drivers can tap a button or say “Hey Google, let’s talk” to start free-flowing discussions about their destination or brainstorm activities. The system allows natural interruptions and follow-up questions, making it feel more like talking to a knowledgeable passenger.

The integration goes beyond general AI capabilities. Google worked directly with automakers to connect Gemini with vehicle-specific systems and documentation. This means drivers can ask practical questions like “How should I prepare my car for an automatic car wash?” or “My garage ceiling is low and the trunk is hitting it. How do I program the trunk so it doesn’t open all the way?”

The AI draws answers from manufacturer-provided owner’s manuals, though the depth of information varies by brand and model. This addresses a common frustration where car features remain unused because drivers don’t know they exist or how to access them.

For electric vehicle owners, Gemini provides real-time battery insights and charging assistance. Drivers can ask about current battery levels, expected charge on arrival, or request nearby charging stations. The system can even suggest cafes or activities near charging locations to make stops more productive.

Climate and comfort controls respond to natural language. Saying “It’s foggy and freezing in here” prompts Gemini to turn up the heat and activate the defroster without requiring specific command phrases.

The upgrade will reach both new vehicles and existing cars with Google built-in through software updates. This backwards compatibility protects the investment of current owners while ensuring the latest AI capabilities reach a broader user base.

The initial rollout covers English-speaking users in the United States, with expansion to additional languages and countries planned for the coming months. Future updates will add access to Gmail, Calendar, and Google Home integration, further connecting the car to drivers’ digital ecosystems.

This development reflects the automotive industry’s broader push toward software-defined vehicles where regular updates add new capabilities. As cars become more like smartphones on wheels, the quality of voice interaction becomes increasingly important for safety and usability. Google’s move positions Android Automotive as a more competitive platform against rivals like Apple CarPlay and Amazon’s automotive initiatives.
