Walmart launches six new budget Android tablets starting at just $97

Budget tablet shoppers have a new option to consider. Walmart has launched six new Android tablets under its Onn brand, with prices ranging from $97 to $288.

The timing couldn’t be better for consumers looking for affordable tablets. Even Amazon’s Fire tablets, long considered the go-to budget option, now start at $130. Plus, Fire tablets run Amazon’s modified Fire OS, which lacks Google Play Store access unless you install it yourself. Amazon also appears to be moving away from Android-based systems entirely – future Fire TV devices will run a Linux-based OS called Vega OS.

Walmart’s new tablets ship with Android 16 and come with the Google Play Store pre-installed. This gives users full access to Android apps without any workarounds. The lineup includes four mainstream tablets and two kid-focused models.

The cheapest option is the Onn 7″ Core at $97. It has a 7-inch display with 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, a 2 GHz MediaTek Helio G80 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. While the specs aren’t impressive, having any new tablet under $100 is noteworthy when hardware prices keep climbing.

The Onn 8.1″ Core costs $138 and appears designed to compete directly with Amazon’s Fire HD 8. It features:

  • 8.1-inch IPS LCD display (1524 x 1000 pixels)
  • 2.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 processor
  • 6GB of RAM
  • 64GB of storage

For $167, the Onn 11″ Core positions itself against the Fire HD 10 but offers more memory and storage at a lower price. It includes an 11-inch screen with 1840 x 1280 resolution, a 2.2 GHz MediaTek Helio G99 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.

The premium model is the Onn 13″ Pro at $288. This tablet has a 13-inch display with 2400 x 1600 resolution, an unspecified 2.6 GHz MediaTek processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. While it costs more than Amazon’s Fire Max 11, Walmart includes a folio case and stylus in the box – accessories that Amazon sells separately.

Walmart also offers two tablets designed for children, both coming with kid-friendly software interfaces and protective bumper cases:

  • Onn 8 Kids Tablet: $118 with 1524 x 1000 display, MediaTek processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage
  • Onn 11 Kids Tablet: $136 with 1840 x 1280 display, MediaTek Helio G80, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage

These new Walmart tablets matter because they provide real competition in the budget tablet space. With Amazon potentially moving away from Android and other manufacturers focusing on premium models, affordable options with full Android functionality are becoming rare. Walmart’s approach of offering standard Android with Google services at low prices could pressure other brands to reconsider their budget strategies.

The tablets aren’t perfect – camera quality appears basic across all models. But for users who primarily want a device for streaming, web browsing, and basic apps, these Onn tablets offer solid value with the convenience of full Google Play Store access right out of the box.
