MediaTek Dimensity 8550 brings Gemini Intelligence to budget flagship phones

MediaTek is making a play for the budget flagship market with its new Dimensity 8550 chipset. The chip is specifically designed to bring Google’s upcoming Gemini Intelligence features to more affordable Android devices, addressing a gap in the market where advanced AI capabilities have largely been reserved for premium phones.

The move comes as Google prepares to roll out Gemini Intelligence across Android, introducing a new layer of AI-powered features that go beyond current capabilities. These include generative UI widgets and enhanced Gboard functionality, first shown off at “The Android Show” earlier this month. However, these features come with strict hardware requirements that many budget and mid-range phones can’t meet.

MediaTek announced that the Dimensity 8550 includes support for Google Gemini Nano V3, which is the key requirement that has locked out many existing chipsets from accessing Gemini Intelligence. The company says the chip is “powered by MediaTek’s powerful NPU 880 and an ever-growing generative AI ecosystem” and includes an LLM Booster for improved AI performance.

This represents a significant shift in the smartphone market. Traditionally, the most advanced AI features debut on flagship devices costing $800 or more before eventually trickling down to cheaper phones. By building Gemini Intelligence support directly into a chipset designed for the “flagship killer” segment – typically phones priced between $400-600 – MediaTek is compressing that timeline considerably.

The Dimensity 8550 is largely identical to the Dimensity 8500 that MediaTek launched earlier this year. Both chips use the same 1+3+4 core configuration with an “All Big Core” CPU setup using exclusively Cortex-A725 cores. The main difference is the upgraded NPU (Neural Processing Unit) that enables the AI capabilities Google requires.

For phones to actually support Gemini Intelligence, they’ll need more than just the right chipset. Google’s requirements also include:

  • At least 12GB of RAM
  • Regular Android security updates
  • Support for the latest Android versions

Current phones using the Dimensity 8500 include popular models like the Motorola Edge 70 Pro, Xiaomi 17T, and Poco X8 Pro. These devices have found success by offering flagship-level performance at significantly lower prices than premium phones from Samsung, Google, and Apple.

The timing is crucial for MediaTek as the company continues to challenge Qualcomm’s dominance in the Android chip market. While Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors power most high-end Android phones, MediaTek has been gaining ground in the mid-range and budget segments. Adding cutting-edge AI capabilities to affordable phones could help the company win over more device manufacturers and consumers.

Google’s push for Gemini Intelligence also represents a broader trend in the smartphone industry toward AI-powered features as the next major selling point. With hardware improvements like faster processors and better cameras offering diminishing returns, manufacturers are looking to AI to create new experiences that justify phone upgrades.
