MediaTek launches Dimensity 7500 with major performance boost

MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 7500, marking a significant step up for its mid-range chipset lineup. While recent releases like the Dimensity 7200, 7300, 7400, and 7450 brought only incremental improvements, the 7500 represents a more substantial upgrade that could help Android phones compete better with Apple’s mid-tier offerings.

The timing is important for MediaTek, which has been trying to establish itself as a serious alternative to Qualcomm in the premium and upper mid-range markets. With smartphone manufacturers looking for ways to offer flagship-like features at lower price points, a capable 7-series chip could be exactly what the market needs.

New architecture brings real performance gains

The Dimensity 7500 uses TSMC’s 4nm process and introduces a completely new CPU setup based on Arm’s latest Armv9.3-A architecture. It combines four Arm C1 Pro cores running at up to 2.6 GHz with four Arm C1 Nano cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz. The Mali-G625 MC2 GPU handles graphics processing.

MediaTek claims the new chip delivers:

  • 11% faster cold app launches
  • 11% faster app installations
  • 30% faster app switching
  • 19% faster game level loading
  • 40% faster file transfers
  • 68% faster video transcoding

Power efficiency also sees improvements, with 5% to 9% lower power consumption in everyday apps and 4% to 7% lower power usage while gaming.

AI performance gets a major boost

The chipset includes MediaTek’s new NPU 850, which delivers more than twice the AI performance of the previous generation. This matters as more phone features rely on on-device AI processing rather than cloud services.

The chip supports various AI tasks including speech recognition, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, contextual replies, and notification summarization. This local processing helps reduce data usage and improves response times for AI features.

Enhanced camera and display capabilities

Camera support extends to 200MP sensors using MediaTek’s Imagiq 1050 image processor. Key features include:

  • 14-bit DCG support
  • Hardware-based multi-frame noise reduction
  • Hardware face detection
  • Improved low-light processing
  • Enhanced color accuracy

Video recording reaches 4K 30fps in 10-bit HDR with H.264 or HEVC encoding. The chip supports playback of H.264, HEVC, VP9, Dolby Vision, HLG, HDR10, and HDR10+ formats.

For displays, the Dimensity 7500 can drive a primary screen up to 1344 x 2800 resolution at 144Hz, plus a secondary display up to 1300 x 1200 at 120Hz.

Improved connectivity across the board

Connectivity features include tri-band Wi-Fi 6E with MediaTek Xtra Range 3.0, Bluetooth 5.4, and long-range device-to-device communication that can reach kilometer distances in line-of-sight conditions without cellular networks.

The integrated 5G modem supports both SA and NSA networks, with peak downlink speeds up to 5.2 Gbps. Notable features include:

  • High Speed Rail 2.0 for 20% better performance on trains
  • Subway and garage recovery mode for 20% faster reconnection
  • 5G UltraSave 3.0+ technology for up to 20% better power efficiency

First phones expected soon

The Redmi Note 17 series and vivo V80 series are expected to be among the first smartphones powered by the Dimensity 7500, though MediaTek hasn’t officially confirmed launch partners yet. This suggests we could see the first devices in the coming months.

The Dimensity 7500’s improvements come at a crucial time when consumers expect more from mid-range phones. With features traditionally reserved for flagship devices now appearing in cheaper phones, chipsets like this one will determine which brands can offer the best value proposition.
