Huawei has launched the Nova 16 Ultra smartphone, bringing significant upgrades to the company’s photography-focused lineup. The new device packs a 200MP camera system, a massive 7000mAh battery, and a display that reaches 6000 nits of peak brightness.
The timing of this launch is crucial for Huawei as the company continues to rebuild its global smartphone presence following years of restrictions. By focusing on camera capabilities and battery life, the Nova 16 Ultra targets users who prioritize photography and all-day usage over other features.
Display and design highlights
The Nova 16 Ultra sports a 6.84-inch OLED display that supports a 1-120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate and 2160Hz high-frequency PWM dimming. The 6000 nits peak brightness makes outdoor visibility possible even in direct sunlight.
Design-wise, the phone features a horizontal camera bump with two circular sections and a dual-color rear panel. The flat frame and display create a premium feel, while a pill-shaped cutout houses the front-facing cameras.
Advanced camera system for content creators
The main 200MP camera uses a large 1/1.28-inch sensor paired with an f/1.8 aperture for improved light capture. Both OIS (optical image stabilization) and AIS (AI image stabilization) help reduce shake during video recording.
The complete camera setup includes:
- 200MP main camera with 1/1.28-inch sensor
- 50MP telephoto lens with 3.7x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom
- 50MP ultra-wide camera supporting 118-degree shots and 2.5cm macro photography
- Second-generation red maple color lens with 1.5 million spectral channels
On the front, a 50MP selfie camera with a 1/2.5-inch sensor and f/2.0 aperture provides sharp self-portraits. The front system also includes a primary color lens for more vibrant photos.
Performance powered by Kirin 9010S
Huawei’s Kirin 9010S chipset drives the Nova 16 Ultra, delivering what the company claims is enough power for 120fps gaming in titles like PUBG. This represents a significant performance jump over the previous Nova 15 Ultra.
To handle the increased performance, Huawei includes a new ice bridge cooling architecture that improves thermal performance by 25% compared to the Nova 15 Pro.
All-day battery life and fast charging
The 7000mAh battery marks the largest capacity in Huawei’s Nova series to date. This should easily provide full-day usage for most users. When charging is needed, the included 100W wired charger promises rapid top-ups, while 50W wireless charging adds convenience.
The phone ships with HarmonyOS 6.1, bringing new 3D themes, AI features, privacy improvements, and interface customizations.
