Apple’s revamped Siri still carries beta label internally ahead of iOS 27 launch

Apple’s much-anticipated Siri overhaul continues to carry internal “beta” and “preview” labels within the company, suggesting the voice assistant’s major upgrade won’t be marketed as finished software when it arrives with iOS 27 later this year. The detail comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who published his WWDC preview ahead of Monday’s keynote.

The ongoing beta designation raises questions about the readiness of Apple’s most significant Siri update since the assistant’s 2011 debut. Apple is transforming Siri into a full chatbot system similar to ChatGPT or Claude, complete with a dedicated app for extended conversations and system-level integration across all Apple devices.

This cautious approach reflects Apple’s broader strategy with AI features following repeated delays. The Apple Intelligence platform, first announced in 2024, has faced multiple postponements as the company works to ensure reliability and user experience meet its standards. The beta label also mirrors Siri’s original rollout, which carried the same caveat for two years after launch.

The new Siri will include several ChatGPT-like features that mark a significant departure from the current command-based system:

  • Cross-device chat synchronization through iCloud
  • Conversation history retention across sessions
  • Auto-delete options for chats (30 days, one year, or never)
  • Back-and-forth conversational interactions
  • Settings controls similar to Messages app

Due to the internal beta status, Apple may implement a waitlist system for certain Siri features when iOS 27 launches in September. This approach would mirror the controlled rollout used for Apple Intelligence two years ago, though it’s unclear which specific capabilities might be restricted initially.

The waitlist strategy allows Apple to manage server load and gather user feedback while gradually expanding access. However, it may frustrate users who have been waiting years for meaningful Siri improvements, especially given the assistant’s reputation for lagging behind competitors like Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa.

Apple’s cautious rollout comes at a critical time in the AI assistant market. Competitors have made significant strides in conversational AI, while Siri has remained relatively static. The company appears to be prioritizing reliability over speed to market, a approach that has served it well historically but may test user patience in the fast-moving AI space.

The revamped Siri represents Apple’s most ambitious attempt to compete with modern AI chatbots while maintaining its focus on privacy and on-device processing. The beta designation suggests the company is still fine-tuning the balance between capability and reliability that users expect from Apple products.

WWDC 2026 begins Monday, June 8 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, where Apple is expected to provide more details about iOS 27 and the new Siri features.
