Samsung is not being subtle. A series of social media teasers posted by the company show chocolate bars, pizza slices and Korean Dalgona candy being cut from tall and narrow to short and wide. The message is clear: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is changing shape.
The clips line up with months of rumors pointing to a wider foldable, and Samsung itself called them an “early indication of how Samsung continues to evolve its foldable portfolio to support the different ways people work, create, communicate, discover and consume content.” That is about as close to a confirmation as you get before an official announcement.
As reported by Stuff, the expected specs include a 5.4-inch outer screen that opens into a 7.6-inch inner panel. That inner display is actually wider than the current Galaxy Z Fold 7 is tall, which is a significant shift in how the phone sits in your hands and how you use it.
The wider format makes a lot of practical sense for specific use cases:
- Watching video on the go, where a wider screen means a more natural, cinematic feel
- Three-app multitasking, where extra horizontal space gives each app more room to breathe
- Reading and browsing, where the proportions feel closer to a small tablet than a phone
The last well-known foldable to go wide was the original Google Pixel Fold, which launched back in 2023. Since then, most Android rivals have gone the opposite direction, opting for tall and slim designs. So why is Samsung bucking that trend now?
The likely answer is Apple. The long-rumored iPhone foldable, expected to carry an “Ultra” label, is widely predicted to use a wide-format design. Samsung may be getting ahead of that narrative, establishing the wide foldable as its own thing before Apple enters the market. Whether that strategy pays off depends on how well the hardware actually delivers.
Speaking of hardware, there is another wrinkle worth noting. Earlier filings to the Wireless Power Consortium certification database pointed to a Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra launching alongside the standard Z Fold 8. Somewhat unexpectedly, the Ultra is expected to be the slimmer of the two, keeping roughly the same dimensions as the current Z Fold 7. What will actually make it an “Ultra” beyond that is still unknown, though one possibility is a camera system borrowed from the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
The Fold 8 is not expected to show up alone at Samsung’s next event either. The current best guess for what else will be announced includes:
- Galaxy Z Flip 8, the clamshell companion to the Fold
- Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2
- Samsung Galaxy Glasses, co-developed with Google and powered by Qualcomm
Samsung has not officially confirmed a date, but the next Unpacked event is widely expected to take place on July 22 in London. If that holds, we are only weeks away from getting the full picture on what could be one of the more significant hardware refreshes Samsung has done in years. A wider foldable is a real design bet, and it will either feel like the obvious choice in hindsight or a costly miscalculation.
