Typing a PIN on a smartwatch is one of those small daily annoyances that nobody talks about enough. Google apparently agrees this is a problem, because the company is quietly working on a way to fix it.
According to a teardown by Android Authority, code strings discovered inside Google’s Connected Phone and Watch services app point to an upcoming feature called “Phone to Watch Unlock.” The idea is straightforward: unlock your Pixel phone, and your paired Pixel Watch gets unlocked automatically. No PIN, no pattern, no squinting at a postage-stamp-sized keyboard.
This is essentially a reversal of Watch Unlock, the existing feature that lets a Pixel Watch keep your phone unlocked when it’s on your wrist. Google is now building that same trusted relationship in the opposite direction. Your phone becomes the key for your watch, instead of the other way around.
The strings found in the app give a pretty clear picture of how the setup will work. You’ll go through a one-time configuration process that asks you to enter your watch’s current PIN or pattern first, verifying your credentials before handing over automatic access to the phone. After that, status messages like “Unlocking your watch” and “Watch unlocked” suggest the process happens in the background without you doing anything at all. There are also prompts like “Automatically unlock your watch?” and “Unlocking your watch just got easier,” which suggests Google plans to nudge users toward the feature once it goes live.
Because this feature lives inside Connected Phone and Watch services, which is a Pixel-exclusive app, it almost certainly won’t be available across all Wear OS devices. Features like Left Behind notifications and Lock phone when left behind also live in this app, and none of those have made it to non-Pixel hardware. So if you’re rocking a Samsung Galaxy Watch or a Fossil, don’t hold your breath.
There’s also a small but thoughtful detail buried in the code. It looks like Google has accounted for users who upgrade to a new Pixel Watch, with a string suggesting the trusted relationship can transfer over without requiring a full setup from scratch. That’s a nice touch, and exactly the kind of friction-reducing detail that makes a feature actually worth using long-term.
The feature isn’t live yet, and there’s no confirmed release date. It’s worth remembering that app teardowns reveal work-in-progress code, and not every discovered feature makes it to a public release. But this one makes too much practical sense to ignore. The Pixel ecosystem has been getting tighter with every release, and this fits squarely into Google’s push to make its phones and watches feel like one connected system rather than two separate gadgets you happen to own. If it ships, it’s the kind of small quality-of-life improvement that quietly makes your day a little less annoying.
