Android’s new tap-to-share feature is the NFC moment we’ve been waiting for

Remember when Apple let iPhones tap together to share contact info and everyone acted like it was magic? Google just did the same thing for Android, and honestly, it’s about time. The company announced that Pixel devices can now use Quick Share to send contacts, photos, and videos simply by tapping two phones together.

This is a bigger deal than it sounds. Sharing between Android phones has always been messier than it should be. Bluetooth pairing, QR codes, digging through menus — none of it is fast. Quick Share helped, but it still required a few taps and some waiting. This new tap-to-transfer approach cuts all of that out. You just bring two compatible Android devices close together and it works.

The way it functions depends on what you’re sharing. For contact info, you don’t even need to open an app. Just be on your home screen, bring the phones close, and you get an instant two-way exchange. That’s genuinely handy at events, meetups, or anywhere you’d normally fumble around asking “what’s your number?” For photos and videos, you open the Share Sheet first, then tap the devices together. Still fast, still simple.

Right now the feature is live on Pixel 6 and newer. Samsung fans aren’t left out for long either. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8 are up next, with a broader Android rollout planned before the end of the year.

What makes this worth paying attention to is the direction it signals. Google and Samsung have been pushing harder on the Android ecosystem experience, trying to make device-to-device interaction feel as polished as what Apple has built with AirDrop and NameDrop. This tap-to-share feature is a direct answer to that. It’s not just about convenience, it’s about making Android feel like a connected platform rather than a bunch of separate phones running the same OS.

Quick summary of what you can tap-to-share:

  • Contact information (from the home screen, no app needed)
  • Photos and videos (via the Share Sheet)
  • More content types coming as the feature expands

If Google can get this rolled out broadly before the holiday season, it could actually change how people think about sharing on Android. That’s not nothing.
