Huawei Nova 17 Pro Max is coming, and it might kill off the Ultra

Huawei has been quietly swapping out “Ultra” for “Pro Max” across almost its entire smartphone range in 2026. Almost. The Nova series was the last holdout, but that’s apparently about to change. According to Huawei Central, a reliable Weibo leaker called SmartPikachu has tipped that the Nova 17 series will include a Pro Max variant, which would mark the first time that naming structure has appeared in the Nova lineup.

So why does this matter? Because it’s not just a name swap. When Huawei makes a branding shift like this, it usually signals something bigger underneath. The Pro Max tier across other Huawei lines has come with meaningful hardware upgrades, not just a shinier badge. If Nova 17 Pro Max follows that pattern, buyers could be looking at a noticeably more capable device than what the Nova Ultra used to offer.

The Nova series has always been Huawei’s more accessible, style-forward line. It tends to attract younger buyers who want something that looks good without paying flagship prices. Bringing in a Pro Max variant could push the ceiling on what Nova hardware is capable of, while still keeping the lower-tier models affordable. That’s a smart play if Huawei wants to squeeze more revenue out of the series without repositioning it entirely.

There’s also a consistency angle here. Having “Pro Max” across all major lineups makes the brand easier to read. Consumers know what to expect from that tier. Mixing Ultra and Pro Max across different series creates confusion, and Huawei clearly decided to clean that up. Nova was just the last one in line.

Details on the Nova 17 Pro Max specs are still thin. What we know is limited to the naming change and the broader pattern Huawei has followed elsewhere. But the leak comes from a source with a reasonable track record, so it’s worth watching closely.

  • Pro Max branding replacing Ultra across Huawei’s 2026 lineup
  • Nova 17 series expected to include a Pro Max variant for the first time
  • Leak sourced from Weibo tipster SmartPikachu
  • Full specs for the Nova 17 Pro Max not yet confirmed

If Huawei sticks to its 2026 schedule, the Nova 17 series could arrive later this year. And when it does, the Ultra name in the Nova world might be gone for good.
