Hunting through Android settings to figure out why your phone is acting up is genuinely one of the most tedious things you can do with a smartphone. Google thinks Gemini can fix that. Literally.
As reported by MakeUseOf, a new feature called Device Help lets Gemini inspect your Pixel’s active settings and real device data, diagnose certain problems, and then change settings on your behalf. That’s a meaningful step beyond the usual AI assistant experience, which mostly means getting a list of generic tips you’ve already tried.
What Device Help actually does
This is not the Pixel’s built-in hardware diagnostics menu, which tests your display, sensors, and connectivity. Device Help is different. It reads how your phone is configured and maps a vague complaint to the specific setting causing it. You open Gemini, tap the attachment button, select Device Help, and just describe the problem in plain language.
From there, Gemini can tell you which apps are eating your mobile data, investigate mystery storage usage, help kill off annoying pop-up ads, reduce notification spam, or keep your screen on longer. If a setting is the fix, it can change it, though it may ask you to confirm first. That last detail matters. It’s not just reading your phone, it’s taking action on it.
Battery drain is a solid use case here. Tracking that down usually means checking half a dozen settings before you find the culprit. And Android’s storage breakdown, with its vague “System” category swallowing 30-plus gigabytes, is another area where having access to actual device data should produce a much better answer than the standard advice to clear your cache.
What Gemini still won’t touch
Google has drawn a clear line around anything sensitive. Device Help cannot:
- Perform a factory reset
- Change your PIN or password
- Delete profiles
- Grant or revoke app permissions
- Modify location or security settings
- Enable accessibility features that could create remote-control risks
So it won’t replace every troubleshooting guide out there. But the restrictions make sense. You don’t want an AI assistant that can wipe your phone on a misunderstanding.
Who can use it right now
Device Help is currently English-only, requires Android 17 or newer, and only works through your Pixel’s primary profile. That’s a fairly narrow launch window for now, but the feature points toward something genuinely useful. AI assistants have been promising to “help” with your phone for years. This one actually goes into the settings and does something about it.
