A tri-fold phone with 2TB of storage is not something you read every day. Huawei’s Mate XT 2 is getting closer to its September 7 launch, and pre-order details have already started leaking out of China, giving us a solid look at what the company is planning. According to Gizmochina, the full configuration lineup has been revealed, and Huawei isn’t holding back.
Every single variant in the Mate XT 2 lineup ships with 16GB of RAM. That’s not a top-tier upsell — that’s the floor. Storage options scale up to 2TB, which is a number you’d expect on a laptop, not a phone. For a device that unfolds into what’s essentially a small tablet, having that kind of storage headroom actually makes sense. But it also signals that Huawei is positioning this squarely at power users willing to spend serious money. Pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet, though given that the original Mate XT launched at a premium, nobody should expect a bargain here.
The design has been rethought in a meaningful way. Huawei is calling the new structure “Wing Fold” architecture. Where the original Mate XT used a Z-shaped fold, the Mate XT 2 has both secondary panels folding inward, wrapping around the main flexible display when the phone is closed. The result is a more enclosed, protected form factor. There’s also a dedicated outer display on one side, so you can take calls, check messages, and handle payments without opening the whole thing up. That’s a practical addition, not a gimmick.
Huawei says the thinnest unfolded section measures just 3.5mm. That’s impressively thin for a device juggling multiple displays and a complex hinge system. The company also says it has reinforced both the hinge and the screens to handle daily bumps and drops better than before. Weight distribution has been a real criticism of multi-fold phones, and Huawei claims the symmetrical design helps balance things out when the device is fully open.
On the front, the outer display has a pill-shaped camera cutout with 3D face recognition and face-based payments expected. There are also reports suggesting on-device heart-rate monitoring, which would be a first for a Huawei phone of this type. The software side runs HarmonyOS 7, which is said to include interface improvements built specifically for the large tri-fold screen, including better multitasking and split-screen controls. As for the chipset, that’s still up in the air. Reports point to either the Kirin 9030S or a new Kirin 9050-series processor, and that distinction matters because it affects both performance and modem capability.
The bigger picture here is that Huawei is doubling down on foldables at a time when most brands are still figuring out how to make a single-fold phone feel worth the premium. A tri-fold with these specs isn’t just a flex, it’s a statement about where Huawei sees the high end of mobile hardware going. Whether the rest of the world gets access to it is another question entirely, given ongoing trade restrictions. But for the Chinese market, September 7 is shaping up to be a very interesting day.
