Custom silicon is where smartphone cameras actually get interesting. Not megapixel counts, not lens arrays that look impressive in a press photo. Actual dedicated hardware that changes how a phone processes what it sees. And if the latest leaks are right, Honor is about to get serious on that front. According to Huawei Central, the Magic 9 series will carry Honor’s new custom imaging chip, continuing a direction the brand has been quietly building toward.
This matters because most Android phones, even flagship ones, rely on the image signal processor baked into their main chipset. That works fine. But when a company builds a dedicated imaging chip on top of that, it gets more control over how photos and video are processed, often with better speed, lower power draw, and more room to do things that the main chip alone just can’t prioritize. Apple has done this for years with its dedicated image processing engines. Google has its own silicon story with the Tensor chips. Honor joining that conversation is not nothing.
The Magic 9 series is already in the warm-up phase, with Honor teasing highlights and leaks filling in the gaps. One detail that’s surfaced suggests the phone will pull in nearly every camera feature from what’s being called the “Robot Phone,” which points to a seriously loaded imaging setup. If that pans out, we’re looking at a camera system that’s not just hardware-heavy but actually built around custom processing from the ground up.
Honor has been on a real upward swing lately. The brand split from Huawei a few years back and has spent that time rebuilding its identity, especially in markets outside China. Flagship credibility is still something it’s working to cement globally, and a proprietary imaging chip is exactly the kind of move that signals the brand is thinking long-term, not just chasing specs for a spec sheet.
Still, let’s not get carried away before the phone is actually in hand. Chips mean nothing without good software to back them up. But the direction is right, and if Honor executes, the Magic 9 could be one of the more interesting camera phones of 2026.
