Xiaomi is doubling down on something most phone makers wouldn’t dare try. The company just confirmed that the Xiaomi 18 Pro series is launching this month, and along with that confirmation came a short teaser video giving us our first real look at the phone. Spoiler: the secondary rear display is back, and it looks like it’s getting an upgrade.
According to Android Headlines, the teaser shows the top half of the phone’s back panel, where you can clearly see a horizontal cover display paired with two vertically aligned cameras on its left side. It’s a familiar look if you’ve seen the Xiaomi 17 Pro, because the design hasn’t changed dramatically. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The layout worked. The question is whether the software behind it has finally caught up.
The rear display on the 17 Pro was genuinely useful, but it always felt like Xiaomi left features on the table. You could do some things with it, sure, but not nearly as much as the hardware deserved. This time around, Xiaomi says the cover screen is “upgraded,” and I’m hoping that means new functionality, not just a brightness bump or a slightly higher refresh rate. Give people more reasons to actually use that second screen and this phone goes from a curiosity to something seriously compelling.
Based on the button placement visible in the teaser, this is likely the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max. The standard 18 Pro is expected to look identical, just in a smaller body. Both models are expected to run on Qualcomm’s next flagship chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Xiaomi has a history of grabbing the more powerful variant when Qualcomm ships two versions, and rumors suggest the same will happen here with the so-called “Pro” chip.
As for the camera setup, the layout looks similar to what we’ve seen before. The main sensor and periscope telephoto are expected to sit inside the cover display housing, while the ultrawide likely sits below it alongside the LED flash and additional sensors. Three cameras total, premium configuration all around.

That would be a real missed opportunity, especially as the foldable and multi-screen phone category keeps growing. Samsung has its cover screens. Xiaomi has this. There’s a real audience for phones that do more than the usual slab.
