Red Magic 12 Pro+ is putting RGB lights inside its water cooling system

RGB lighting on a gaming phone is nothing new. Most of the time it’s just a strip of LEDs slapped on the back to look flashy. But Red Magic is doing something genuinely interesting with the 12 Pro+: the RGB lighting actually traces the path of the coolant through the phone. It’s a small detail, but it’s the kind of thing that makes you stop and say, okay, that’s actually cool.

According to Gizmochina, Jiang Chao, General Manager of Red Magic Gaming Phones, walked through the upgraded cooling system ahead of the phone’s October 15 launch in China. Reservations are already open on Red Magic’s website. So this isn’t vaporware — it’s launching in days.

The cooling setup is a significant upgrade over the Red Magic 11 Pro+. The water-cooling area is larger, the flow channels are thicker, and the layout has been redesigned into a dual-ring system that covers every major heat source in the phone. The coolant leaves a micro-pump and splits into two separate paths. One runs over the chip, the other over the battery. They merge back at the pump. The channels also extend into the fan area, so air and liquid cooling work together at the same time.

Thicker channels are great for heat management, but they need more pressure to move liquid through them. Red Magic solved that with a new dual-crystal micro-pump. Output pressure has gone from 100kPa to 130kPa, meaning the coolant moves faster and further through the system. The liquid itself is a fluorinated coolant, the same type used in AI server infrastructure. That’s not marketing fluff — fluorinated liquids are genuinely effective at pulling heat away from electronics without conducting electricity.

The RGB trick comes from a custom light guide sitting above the airflow channel. It lets the lighting run along the exact same route as the coolant, so the visual effect actually maps to something real happening inside the phone. The Red Magic 11 Pro already made the water-cooling ring visible through a transparent back panel. The 12 Pro+ just takes that further by adding lighting to it. It’s a legitimate evolution of the idea rather than a gimmick bolted on for the spec sheet.

Beyond the cooling, Red Magic is calling this the best-feeling flagship the brand has made. It’s lighter, thinner, and narrower than the 11 Pro+, with softer corners and a screen bezel that shrinks from 1.25mm down to 0.96mm. That’s a meaningful reduction. Gaming phones have historically been chunky, heavy slabs, and Red Magic seems to be pushing back against that reputation.

The 12 Pro+ is also confirmed to run Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, and early Geekbench numbers suggest it’s performing at the top of that chip’s range. For anyone who takes mobile gaming seriously, or just wants a phone that handles heat without throttling performance, this one is shaping up to be worth paying attention to when it lands on October 15.
