Apple quietly bumped iPhone Duo orders by 30% before pre-orders even opened

Pre-orders for iPhone Duo don’t go live until Friday, October 16, and Apple is already scrambling to keep up with demand. That’s a pretty telling sign about how this thing is landing with consumers.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple has increased its iPhone Duo supply chain orders by a massive 30%, citing a report from China’s Securities Times. Total supply for the rest of 2026 still won’t exceed 10 million units, but when you consider that earlier estimates put production at somewhere between 6 and 7 million units, the jump is significant. Apple is clearly chasing a number close to that 10 million ceiling.

So what does this tell us? For starters, it tells us that Apple’s own initial forecasts were conservative, and that whatever signals the company is picking up from retail partners, carrier deals, and early consumer interest are pointing higher than expected. This kind of mid-cycle order bump doesn’t happen by accident. Apple’s supply chain moves are usually deliberate and data-driven, and a 30% increase before a single pre-order is placed is a real statement of confidence.

The iPhone Duo is a newer addition to Apple’s lineup, and there was always going to be some uncertainty around how a different form factor or price positioning would be received. But the market reaction since its announcement last month has apparently been strong enough that Apple is putting its money where its mouth is, literally ordering more hardware to meet demand it didn’t originally plan for.

There’s also some interesting movement in the broader iPhone 18 Pro picture. Securities Times’ supply chain sources say iPhone 18 Pro Max orders have gone up by 10 to 15%, while iPhone 18 Pro orders have been trimmed by a similar 10 to 15%. The net result is that total supply targets for the Pro line haven’t changed overall. This directly contradicts a recent Nikkei Asia report that suggested something different was going on, so take both with a grain of salt until we see actual sales data.

Still, the Pro Max gaining share within the Pro lineup isn’t surprising. Consumers have been gravitating toward the largest iPhone for a few years now, and Apple has responded by loading the Pro Max with exclusive features and battery advantages that make it hard to justify the smaller Pro for many buyers.

For anyone who’s been on the fence about the iPhone Duo, the supply situation is worth paying attention to. A 30% order increase sounds like a lot, but if demand really does surge at launch, stock could still get tight fast. Apple is opening up early checkout setup today ahead of Friday’s pre-orders, which is worth doing if you want the fastest possible experience when the window opens.

This is shaping up to be a stronger iPhone cycle than some analysts expected heading into the back half of 2026.
