Compal Communications has received ODM orders for two low-cost CDMA handsets from Nokia, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times January 16 report. Combined quantity of the two models is likely to total four millions units and volume shipments are to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, the paper said.
Already a major handset contract maker for Motorola, this would be the first time that Compal simultaneously manufactures CDMA handsets for the world’s largest and second largest vendors, the paper said.
Compal’s R&D team in South Korea will be responsible for design work for the two Nokia-handsets, this in order to differentiate them from the CDMA models designed by its Taiwan-R&D team for Motorola, the paper added.

So Nokia isn’t backing out of CDMA completely I see. 4 million is quite a large number, but these are low end phones therefore volume is key. Well congrats to Compal! I used to build laptops with a few of their ODM models.
