According to iSuppli, display makers should thank Apple and their competitors who try to make the so called “iPhone killers” for having a business (and even growth) in the time of recession.
The research company says that worldwide shipments of mobile-phone LCD displays between 2.5-inches and 4.9-inches are projected to rise to 149.9 million units in 2009, representing 22.1% increase from last year. However, overall shipments of all mobile phone displays are expected to decline by 11% for the year.
From these numbers, we conclude there are many cool phones in the handset makers’ pipelines, which is a good thing. 😉
Commenting on the numbers, iSuppli’s Vinita Jakhanwal said: “The continued success of Apple Inc.’s iPhone is driving market demand for competitive products. Companies are rolling out a range of iPhone killers, including new products based on Google’s Android operating system. To this end, many OEMs are introducing higher-end, multimedia-enabled phones that include larger displays with superior resolutions.”
Other notable numbers:
- Overall shipments of mobile phone displays declined 17.4% in Q4 2008, and 8.5% in Q1 2009;
- In the second quarter of 2009, shipments rose by 4.6%;
- And it is expected that third quarter rise as well, due to upcoming holiday season and demand from Tier-1 handset OEMs;
- Finally, Q4 2009 is uncertain period, as it is unknown whether consumer demand can persists.
