We haven’t heard much about the sequel to Sony Ericsson’s first xperia since it passed the FCC in the fall, but their PR team has just gone official with a release date of the first week of January. Versus the original, the X2 switches to a capacitive touch screen, upgrades to an 8 megapixel camera, and now runs Windows Mobile 6.5, but all of the signature stuff, like the Tiles user interface and arc sliding mechanism are still there. Apparently the release is a little later than expected, since carrier-specific apps didn’t play nice with the software, but at least that indicates that a subsidized version of the device will be available right off the bat.
