Well look at that. Almost as soon as the blogosphere started to speculate that AT&T’s suspension of online iPhone sales for the New York City metro area was an attempt to manage 3G data traffic, AT&T has pulled an about-face and resumed online iPhone sales for New Yorkers. Entering an NYC ZIP code previously returned a “sorry, this device is not available in your ZIP code,” but now works without a hitch.
One AT&T customer service representative claimed that AT&T had halted sales through its website because the city just didn’t have enough cell towers, while another rep claimed that fraud was to blame. AT&T’s official response to us stated that “we periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels. The iPhone is available in our New York retail stores and those of our partners.” Whatever the real reason, it’s just good to see online sales back in full swing for The Big Apple!
