This is a mockup, but it sure looks nice!

Whether you call it the Apple Tablet, the iSlate, the iGuide, there’s no denying that rumors surrounding the fabled Apple tablet device has reached a fever pitch. It’s gotten to the point where the Wall Street Journal has apparently confirmed through “people briefed” by Apple that the tablet computer will be unveiled later this month and start shipping in March. According to their sources, there are apparently two different versions of the tablet, each sporting a different exterior finish and a 10- or 11-inch display. Unfortunately for people expecting a super-affordable Apple tablet device, we’re told the tablet will be priced around $1,000.

If the WSJ‘s sources prove accurate, we’re mere weeks from seeing the Apple tablet become reality. Specs on the rumored device were allegedly leaked yesterday, indicating that the Apple tablet will run a new version of Mac OS X and come packed with desktop-class processing power. There’s also talk of the tablet being named the “iSlate,” or possibly the “iGuide.” But it’s still all speculation – especially those leaked specs – until we get solid details from Apple itself.

As for pricing, the report uses analysts’ estimates to come up with their $1,000 price point. That doesn’t carry too much weight as far as we’re concerned, but it’s notably higher than previous speculation that pegged the Apple tablet at about half that price. The WSJ’s claim that the tablet will be unveiled later this month jives well with rumors of a Jan. 27th announcement from Apple.

The Apple tablet is getting more and more real everyday, but it’s a good idea to take it all at face value. Until Apple announces a tablet, this is all firmly in rumor territory.
