There are many different flavors of Android homescreens. We’ve seen HTC Sense, Motorola MotoBlur, Samsung’s TouchWiz, the ‘grid’ UI on Huawei’s Pulse, and the Time and Mediascape UI’s from Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10, just to name a few. Another UI from Sony Ericsson, similar to the original X10, is the X10 Mini. The X10 Mini’s UI lacks a lot of the flash that its predecessor has, but still retains some beauty. Well, it looks like someone has ported it to the MyTouch 3G, but don’t get your hopes up.
The developer who began the port to the MyTouch 3G actually abandoned the project all together, and is offering no help to the community that wanted to pick up the project from where he left off. This is bad news for those looking forward to this port, as there may not be many people who actually have access the initial ROM to begin the porting. On the other hand, the port was pretty much useless, nothing worked, and if the developer continued working on the port, it would probably be quite a while before there was a decent ROM to be flashed.
Another problem for the port was that the developer was porting it to the MyTouch 3G, which has a bigger screen than the X10 Mini. Getting the graphics to work on a bigger screen would result in pixellated content, and graphical errors. The MyTouch would indeed be the prime candidate, as it’s already rooted, and it’s developer community is large. However, the best candidate as far as screen size goes is the Pulse Mini, but even that is questionable, as the Pulse Mini has a resistive screen opposed a capacitive screen. Whether or not that could affect the porting process, I have no idea, but maybe it’s not that bad that the developer halted the operation, because it probably wouldn’t be pretty.
The story was too good to go unposted. Some Android fans love anything rooting or hacking related, so this is for you guys. As for myself, I think I’ll just wait until the original X10 software is ported to the Nexus One. Or well, depending on when the X10 comes out, I may have to wait until it’s ported to the EVO.
