Take this with a grain of salt, but iPhone OS 4.0, which will be announced on Thursday, may have video calling capabilities if this screenshot from a retracted O2 UK iPhone page is to be believed. It seems like a strange feature to include, since no iPhone, even the much-lauded iPad, doesn’t have a forward-facing video camera. I’m tempted to believe that the table was copy and paste from another smartphone’s rate list, and that particular feature was erroneously left in.
On the more optimistic side, it’s possible that Apple is announcing a new iPhone that would have a forward-facing camera, as previously rumoured. On O2, the network strain of video calling is probably manageable, but I couldn’t imagine AT&T’s infrastructure handling any sort of two-way live video streaming without imploding into itself in a great cosmic event, leaving behind it a dead void through which no 3G signal would be found for millennia to come. Still, we can dream, eh?
