Ringtone and mobile content site Myxer has been keeping tabs on who has been downloading for which platform, and of their 33 million U.S. users, they have determined that the proportion of BlackBerry downloads have jumped to 63% from 58% last year, strengthening its hold as the king of the hill. Android went from 7% to 17%, which is both the highest absolute and proportional growth, allowing it to overtake Windows Mobile, who dropped from 21% to 10% share. webOS and Symbian participation was negligible, accounting for less than 2% between the two of them. The most popular BlackBerry being used was the Curve 8330 (accounting for 4.8 million of 22 million downloads), and the least was the Curve 8320 with 384,190 downloads. The funniest part of the stats is that women were actually the most likely across all devices to buy a ringtone, or wallpaper, or whatever else Myxer’s selling. 70% of BlackBerry Pearl 8130 users were of the female persuasion, while the highest percentage of dudes were packing a BlackBerry Storm 9530, but even then it was only 46%.
I’d be curious to see if the numbers for paid content are similar, since the majority of Myxer’s stuff looks free. If you’re interested in a closer look at the report, you can find Myxer’s PDF here, or cruise around for free ringtones and wallpaper here.
