iPhone OS 4.0 gets jailbroken, for really this time

It hasn’t yet been a full 24 hours since Apple unveiled their iPhone OS 4.0 to the world, but the iPhone Dev Team has already jailbroken the firmware, complete with video evidence that they’ve managed to open up the latest iPhone OS file system. We first caught wind of an iPhone 4.0 jailbreak yesterday, from an iPhone hacker not associated with the venerable Dev Team. It’s possible that the security vulnerability found in previous iPhone operating systems (iPhone OS 3.1.3) allowed him to start work on a solution to crack the unreleased OS 4.0’s file system. Well, today, the iPhone Dev Team’s MuscleNerd has separately confirmed that it’s indeed possible to break the upcoming iPhone OS out of “jail” and get apps like Cydia (the jailbreak app store) and Veency up and running. The video here proves as much.

One of the biggest reasons for jailbreaking an iPhone in the past was the ability to run apps in the background (multitask). Now that iPhone OS 4.0 officially supports multitasking, the argument for jailbreaking an iPhone is just that much weaker. Still, some would argue that the multitasking UI available through jailbroken apps like ProSwitcher is more attractive and better implemented than Apple’s native dock-based multitask tray.

We’ll likely have to wait until Apple officially looses iPhone OS 4.0 before the Dev Team will release their jailbreak solution. Any earlier and Apple would have a chance to plug the security hole and kill this jailbreak. Now, we wait!
