Google tweaks Gmail for mobile

Google has added a few improvements to its web-based Gmail for mobile and, while it’s not enough to steer me away from a dedicated app, it offers an easier way to stay connected on the go with your Android phone, iPhone or iPad.

The search app has redesigned the web app’s underlining code in order to continue to improve it and this updates includes a redesigned compose page.

“Once you select a contact from the auto-complete menu, you’ll also notice that the contact becomes an object that you can tap on,” Google said on its blog. “Tapping on a contact opens a detailed view that lets you double-check the person’s e-mail address or remove them from the e-mail. Yes, this means you can remove an e-mail address in two taps!”

Other new features include:

* Remove the contact you just added by tapping Backspace.
* Press the ‘+’ button to see your top contacts, or hide them by pressing the ‘–’ button.
* If for some reason auto-complete fails you and the person you are trying to reach is a Gmail user, just type their Gmail username and a comma, and we’ll take care of the pesky @ sign and the rest (so [hikingfan] becomes [hikingfan@gmail.com].)
* The page now fills the entire screen, giving you more space to see what you’re writing.
