Xperia X10 may see multi-touch afterall

Remember when we reported that Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 would not be receiving multi-touch capabilities, even after it was upgraded from Android 1.6 to 2.1? Well it looks like the guys over at AndroidAndMe have heard otherwise.

Not only did we hear from Sony Ericsson’s PR team that the X10 would not receive multi-touch, we heard that it can’t. Supposedly there was a hardware issue, making the device incapable of pinch-to-zoom. There seems to be someone “on the inside” who recently spoke up, saying that the X10 will receive the Android 2.1 update in September, and multi-touch will surely be enabled.

This is big news for some who wanted this device, but were turned off that it wouldn’t be able to get these capabilities. I don’t use multi-touch all that often on my Nexus One, but it was irritating for a long time that I didn’t even have the option. The X10 is a beautiful device, and the custom UI that Sony Ericsson has put on top of it is stunning. To see something like multi-touch be left out on such a gorgeous device has got to be a major letdown for some who were eyeing it.

But that brings up another thought. We have no idea when this device will actually hit the US. I know most of our readers are not from the US, so it may not matter of its availability here. AndroidAndMe brings up a good point. Even if the X10 does make it to the US with multi-touch in tow, how much will it matter? The device is nothing to shake your head at, but with devices like the Droid Incredible, and the HTC Evo 4G coming in the near future, how much of those who wanted the X10 are willing to pass these devices up that certainly beat it in their own ways?

So does the fact that the X10 may receive multi-touch capabilities make you want to wait it out, and get it when it’s finally released?
