AT&T publicly mocks frustrated Android users with Android-powered ‘Banana Phone’

If you’re an AT&T customer who’s feeling a little frustrated with AT&T’s decidedly lackluster lineup of Android smartphones, you’re not alone. While T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon continue to launch high-end Android phones that aren’t locked down and crippled, the carrier is apparently taking their time to go big on Android. One AT&T subscriber was so frustrated, in fact, that he decided to post a comment on AT&T’s Facebook page. The official Facebook account – or, rather, the person behind the Facebook account – replied to the critical comment by mocking him and showing off the carrier’s upcoming “Banana Phone.” The response might come of somewhat comical to some, but others might see it as maddening. You be the judge.

This is Facebook user Jeb Johnston‘s initial comment:

Ok AT&T in 3 days Verizon releases the HTC Incredible, the next in their line of quality Android phones and one of the better models out there. Now I’m no marketing genius, but I would think that not making any announcements for a good Android phone, given your existing selection, in competition with this phone’s release would only serve to encourage some of your customers to head to Verizon instead. So I hope you have something planned to try and keep some of us customers here or at least give us hope for the future.

This is the response posted on the AT&T Facebook page:

Well, Jeb, I probably shouldn’t show you this, but I snapped this pic from deep within our labs recently…http://www.flickr.com/photos/sicklittlefox/2890241156/

The mockery of this AT&T customer is either going make you mad or give you a chuckle. To their credit, AT&T followed up with an explanation of how the wireless industry keeps a tight lid on upcoming mobile phone launches and that “we thought we’d bring some humor to the page.” There are also AT&T customers that found the response hilarious in the name of good, clean fun.

What say you? Was the carrier’s public mockery of a frustrated Android user over the line? Was the Banana Phone a fair response to Jeb’s comment? Let us know in the comments below!
