junaio, that other popular augmented reality platform (in addition to Layar), is about to “go Android.” The application is already available for select developers, which are part of the closed beta program. The wider availability — when everyone will be able to grab the application — is set for mid-May.
The Android version will come with the natural feature tracking, which according to Peter Meier (metaio’s CEO) could “revolutionize outdoor or print advertising, packaging and mobile gaming.” Users will be able to point their phone to a billboard and virtual characters might be jumping out of it. The software recognizes the image and overlays dynamic data, true to position, scale and target group into the real world view of the camera.
Peter went on to add: “Connecting ads, packages, billboards, signs or whatever image with multimedia content within a channel on junaio is a fantastic new cross-media way for brands to get in touch with users. At the right place and in the right moment.”
And for the record, junaio has been available for the iPhone and the number of registered developers has reached over 250 since opening up the API in February 2010.
