In the latest video of a mobile device playing a video game intended for desktop computers or gaming consoles, the classic Quake 3 first-person shooter “Kwaak 3” has been ported to the Nexus One. If you recall, the Motorola Droid was previously tapped as the breakout Kwaak 3 handset. Well, now Nexus One owners can join their Droid-owning brethren in the frag-fest. It’s been a while since we’d seen the Quake 3 clone doing its thing on the Droid, but, like they say, “better to frag late than to never have fragged at all.”
So, what took so long to get Kwaak 3 ported to the Nexus One? Hardware controls. The Motorola Droid has its slide-out QWERTY keyboard and the d-pad to assist in game controls, but the Nexus One is an all-touchscreen jobbie. In order to get the game to work on the N1, game controls had to be moved to the trackball and the volume rocker. The trackball moves/aims your gun, and fires your weapon when you click down on the trackball. Pressing down on the Volume Up key moves you forward, while pressing on the Volume Down key makes you jump.
The game reportedly runs well on the Nexus One. Gameplay is smooth and as lag-free as you could hope for on a mobile phone. To us, the ability to play this classic FPS on a smartphone is simply awesome-tastic! What say you? Let us know in the comments below.
If you’re interested in downloading the game for your own N1, you should know that it takes a little tinkering with your Nexus One. You’ll need a Windows machine, as well. If that sounds like something you can manage, head on over to the Kwaak 3 Google Code website for installation instructions.
