JiWire, the company that brings ads to/monetizes free hotspots is out with some interesting mobile ad numbers. The main point is that advertisements in mobile applications work, with over half of survey respondents saying they’ve acted on an in-app ad in the last 30 days, and 18% made a purchase as a result of it.

Here are some other findings from JiWire’s research:

  • 40% of respondents spend over one hour daily using apps and have an average of 22 apps on their mobile device.
  • 76% prefer free apps that have advertising over paying a fee for the same apps.
  • 84% would be just as likely or more likely to engage with an ad relevant to their current location.
  • 53% are willing to share their current location to receive more relevant advertising.
  • 52% acted on an advertisement in an app and 18 percent made a purchase from an ad in an app in the last 30 days.

In terms of the device usage, Android saw strong growth of 44% from last quarter and continues to be the second most popular OS (after the iPhone). Symbian grew at 211%, while RIM OS, Windows Mobile OS, webOS and others all show decreases. As for the iPad, the average number of total daily uniques on the iPad was 1.53% of all unique ad requests across JiWire’s network, which is a significant number for a device in its first month on the market…
