Nokia’s N900 has a spotty reputation. It was the device many people were looking to redeem the Nokia N97, which caused many headaches among the enthusiast crowd. Problem was the N900 wasn’t really meant for consumers, it was still viewed as an unpolished product meant for the die hards who wouldn’t mind playing with their devices for hours at a time to get this particular setting or that particular function working properly. Then the whole MeeGo thing happened, and people started wondering what future, if any, does Maemo have at Nokia.
Today we get an update to both those concerns. Firmware 1.2 polishes up Maemo, adds Facebook instant messaging, a better email inbox, video browsing, the ability to browse the web in portrait mode, and access to the new version of Nokia’s Ovi Store. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Nokia has confirmed that the N900 will not get any updates to MeeGo. You’re going to have to buy a new device, which may or may not be a bad thing considering how hefty the N900 actually is.
Either way, for those N900 owners out there, by the end of tomorrow you should be seeing an update become available for your device. Let us know how you like it in the comments below!
