Nokia Romania’s new director, Risto Meskus, has said that the local handset factory is preparing to move from basic phone assembly to more complex smartphones. He went on to add that the time was right for such a migration up the value chain. However, Meskus hasn’t revealed which smartphones exactly the Romanian plant will be working on.
As you may know, the plant is situated in the village of Jucu just outside Cluj, the location that apparently is getting hot for the tech industry in the country. In addition to Nokia, it has also courted Vodafone, Orange and some Romanian software developers, leading to the population jump from 300,000 to 500,000 in just a few years.
Back to Nokia… Its Jucu plant started production in February 2008 and currently has some 4,000 staff. The Finnish giant’s has a market share of 50% in the country and is followed by Samsung and LG, which hold 28% and 10% of the market, respectively.
