Sprint HTC EVO 4G gets its first Sprint commercial

Tomorrow, the US will be able to get their hands on the Sprint HTC EVO 4G, and all its 4G glory. To get you sold on the hype, Sprint has released their first EVO 4G TV ad that is a little less intimidating than the Droid Does campaign.

The ad shows all sorts of “first.”  The ad opens with a stone wheel rolling alone, which bumps into a metal wheel, which in turn bumps a whole slew of “first” things – like telephones and what not. It’s hardly in your face or intrusive, and it’d be enjoyable enough to watch even if it wasn’t an ad for a phone. The EVO 4G is only shown briefly, and the only thing you get from it is that the HTC-made EVO is the first 4G phone, and that it’s from Sprint.

Actually, I hope that the campaign doesn’t stay like this. While it’s a nice approach for an introduction to the device, the ads could definitely stand to get more aggressive. Wow, it’s the first 4G phone, but it does a lot more than deliver great data speeds, if you’re in a covered area, that is.

Instead of robots punching babies, or whatever the Droid Does commercials brought us, Sprint should really flex the EVO’s usability muscle. The Droid Incredible, while very similar to the EVO, is being advertised as something ‘you’ve never seen before’, in an almost cultish sort of way.  The Sprint ads should show the HTC EVO 4G video chatting with someone, showing pictures from a vacation on the TV while connected through its HDMI output – something to show the phone off in a way someone would use the device. Apple has always done this, and its plain to see that they are truly showing off what is capable when using the iPhone. All I’m saying is I don’t want to see the MyTouch 3G campaign with a bunch of famous people holding the phone and passing it off, nor do I need to see Hesse walking down the street with the EVO in his hand all in black and white. This is the Sprint HTC EVO 4G, and it should be given its due credit!
