Ruler 1.0 for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch Brings Old-School Measuring Goodness

Ruler App for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

This is a fun one. If you’ve ever wanted to turn your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch into a ruler… Now you can, with the new ‘Ruler’ app from Andrew and Alexa Kaz.

Diving into the app just a bit, you can tell much care was taken in putting this one together. The graphics are clean (and even quite beautiful), with the wooden feel reminding me of my 4th grade geometry class gear (not the ruler I used, but the meter stick the teacher used to rap my fingers with… long story).

Using the app is simple and intuitive. Pop it open, lay it down next to the object you wish to measure, and BAM, there you have it… an accurate measurement. You can easily choose between inches and centimeters… just tap the measurement you’d like to use. It’s right there on the ruler! There’s also a semi-transparent blue slider you can use. This marker can actually be set to snap to the edge of your device, allowing you to measure something much larger than the width of your device. Handy, for sure.

Note: Laugh all you want, but utilities like this often come in handy. On more than one occasion I’ve popped open a measurement tool like this when a tape measure or ruler were nowhere to be found… tools aren’t often on-hand, but chances are your mobile device is nearby!

ruler 1.0 released for iPad and iPhone – Rivals Wood

Pahoa, Hawaii – Independent developer Andrew Kazmierski is pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of ruler 1.0, his new digital measuring device for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. Beautifully crafted, it is designed for intuitive, natural usage. Despite a size disadvantage, ruler mirrors the practicality and ease of a physical ruler. To accurately measure objects larger than your device, the app features a movable marker that snaps.

“My wife Alexa was cutting a Peruvian Torch cactus, and we didn’t have a real ruler,” commented Andrew. “We thought for sure our new iPad would offer a decent solution. We were wrong, so following the mescaline experience, we set out to carve our own ruler.” Andrew Kaz co-created Classics for iPhone in 2008. Classics peaked at #4 on the US charts and became the inspiration for Apple’s recent revolution in digital reading, iBooks.
