Symbian releases latest figures; Announces new global R&D center in China

Developer and licensor of Symbian OS, Symbian Limited, today released the latest unaudited financial and operational figures for both the second quarter and the half year ended 30 June 2007.

Highlights:Nigel Clifford, Chief Executive Officer, Symbian Ltd

  • More than 18.7 million smartphones were shipped worldwide in Q2 2007, 52% growth since the same period last year.
  • H1 2007 shipments topped 34.6 million units, more than in the whole of 2005.
  • During the H1 2007, 33 Symbian smartphones models commenced shipment with 25 (76%) of these for use on HSDPA or W-CDMA (3G) networks.
  • 7,888 third party Symbian applications are now commercially available, an increase of 48% on 30 June 2006 (5,323 applications)

Beside releasing the latest numbers, Symbian Limited also announced the establishment of a new global R&D center in Beijing, China. The center is Symbian’s fourth R&D center with the others located in UK and India, and “marks a significant milestone for Symbian in its long-term commitment to the region.”

There you have it. Symbian is already the market leading mobile OS, and they clearly want to extend their leadership to China. We’ll watch this space carefully and keep you folks well informed…
