Doubletwist for Android

The iPhone has a great media center called iTunes, what does Android have? Doubletwist hopes that you’ll mention their name when asked that. The Android music service brings a lot of features for those music lovers that want something more than just the ability to drag and drop their music to their SD card. Let’s walk through the features this application offers you along with the PC client that allows you to sync over WiFi with a $4.99 add-on purchase.

Available: Android Market
Version Reviewed: 1.4.7

The Good
  • Wireless syncing is a paid feature, but is useful for people that want to keep their phones wireless.
  • Having a PC client is helpful for managing all your songs on the computer end, instead of doing the old drag and drop method.
  • The Wireless sync feature is very useful for those that aren't fond of plugging in their phones to their computers.
The Bad
  • Album issues come in when it mishandles my music
  • Bugs are fairly unlikely but present in this app
  • This application was very slow on my phone, and that's not the case with any other media player.

Features & Functionality

This player isn’t much different from the rest of the pact. It has a well-designed UI, straight forward menus, and decent music organization skills. Starting out you’ll be brought to the main menu that asks how you’d like to go through your music; artists name, album, or just view all songs. The first thing to note about this player is that it doesn’t only do music. In the main menu you can choose to watch the videos on your SD card, listen to your podcast, or see what’s playing on the radio. Those three alternative features make this more of a media center than just a music player.

Let’s go from the top – the music player. The player itself is pretty nice. When you start browsing the music, you have a lot of options for how you want to go through the songs you have on your phone. Listening to music on the player is very smooth, and simplistic. The now playing screen doesn’t over-whelm you with buttons and options, rather it allows you to listen the music you want with great quality and not have to change many features to get it. The beauty of this application comes from the large album artwork it is built around. The player can pull down the artwork either from your phone’s memory card, or if you don’t have it, it can pull the image down from the web for a high price of $3.99.

The next important feature of this application is the PC client. The client is available for both Windows and Mac users. The application works well on both systems, and when used with the Android application and the $4.99 air sync feature, this is the best service out there. It takes all your songs from your computer, and lets you manage it from the iTunes-like application. It comes with a great sync feature that can pull your playlist and organization settings from iTunes or Windows Media Player and import them to offer you a more family experience.

The other features are standard for this type of application. The podcast feature isn’t much different from that on iOS devices. It allows you to download podcasts from the PC application and play it on the go. The radio service is like Pandora; it allows you to stream music from web using preset categories like Hip-Hop, Blues, Country, and more. When you select the category it offers you a few web stations that will give you what you want. The only problem about this service is that it never worked on my phone, but looking at what it offers me, I’d rather use Slacker or Pandora.Th

Conclusion

This is a great all-in-one application for those looking for a media center for all their music, videos, and radio needs. This isn't very focused on anyone of the offered services, so you'll be left without the great options of PowerAMP, smooth and fast music streaming experience of Slacker radio. What you're getting is an application that does it all.

Recommend

Maybe; If you are looking for a music player with a PC client, otherwise, the music player itself isn't that great.
